What Are Galvanized Steel Pipes?

Galvanized steel pipes are steel water supply pipes coated with zinc to slow rust and corrosion. They were widely used in Canadian residential plumbing before 1980. Over time, the zinc coating wears away and internal corrosion can restrict water flow, reduce water pressure and cause leaks.

Galvanized steel pipes carry drinking water to sinks, toilets, showers and water heaters. They are not drain or sewer pipes. In BC, galvanized steel is not permitted for new residential water distribution systems except when repairing an existing galvanized system.

How to identify them: Galvanized steel pipe is rigid metal pipe. It is often grey or silver on the outside and may show rust at threaded connections. A magnet will stick to galvanized steel but not copper or plastic pipe.

Common signs of deterioration: Low water pressure, rust coloured water, uneven water flow, visible corrosion and recurring leaks can indicate aging galvanized steel supply lines.
