Should Galvanized Steel Pipes Be Replaced?
Yes. Replace galvanized steel water pipes when they corrode, leak, reduce water pressure or discolor water. Older galvanized systems can restrict water flow from internal rust and mineral buildup. New galvanized steel pipe is not used for residential water distribution systems in BC except for repairs to existing galvanized systems.
Replace galvanized steel pipes when you notice:
- Low water pressure throughout the home
- Brown, yellow or rust coloured water
- Frequent leaks or pinhole leaks
- Visible rust or corrosion at pipe connections
- Uneven water flow between fixtures
- Water damage, damp walls or ceiling stains
- Major renovation work that opens walls or ceilings
A plumber in Vancouver can replace a single failed section of galvanized pipe. A full repipe may be the better long term option when galvanized pipe runs throughout an older Vancouver home or when there are multiple leaks and widespread corrosion.
PEX and copper are common replacement materials for residential water supply lines. PEX is flexible and can reduce the number of fittings required behind walls. Copper is a durable metal option with a higher material cost.
