How Do I Know If My Home Has Poly-B Pipes?
Your home may have Poly B pipes if you find smooth grey flexible water lines marked PB2110 or CSA B137.8. Check near the water heater, under sinks, beside the main water shut off valve and in utility rooms. A plumber can confirm the material if the markings are missing or inaccessible.
Pipe colour: Poly-B is usually light grey. It can also be blue, black, white or silver. Colour alone does not confirm that a pipe is Poly B.
Pipe marking: Look for PB2110, PB or CSA B137.8 printed along the pipe. PB2110 is the clearest visible identifier of polybutylene piping.
Pipe location: Inspect exposed water lines near the water heater, water meter, main shut off valve, kitchen sink, bathroom sink, laundry area, utility room, crawl space or unfinished basement. Poly B is used for water supply lines.
Pipe age: Poly B was commonly installed in Canadian homes built or renovated from the late 1970s through the 1990s. Home age alone does not confirm that a pipe is Poly B.
